Reaching the Cities: Part 6 of the Dunamis Series
Welcome back to Part 6 of our Dunamis Series on Reaching the Cities for God (Company Evangelism). Thank you for investing your time in this series; we pray that the insights shared have been a blessing to you. In this segment, we’ll continue exploring God’s original plan for the Seventh-day Adventist integrated health and gospel work and we’ll examine how God intends to help us realign with His divine blueprint.
Understanding God’s Vision
Throughout this series, we’ve delved into prophetic insights about our mission. As we reflect on Inspiration, we find clear directives:
- God has qualified His people to enlighten the world and establish sanitariums, schools, and publishing houses globally.
- There will be a time when medical missionaries from other denominations will feel envious of the influence exerted by Seventh-day Adventists.
- The Lord intends for drugless healing methods to be prominent in every large city through our medical institutions.
Despite this divine guidance, we must ask ourselves: Why do Seventh-day Adventists lack a prominent global presence in effective drugless healing today?
The Answer Lies in Our Choices
Our deviation from God’s original design in medical and evangelistic work has left us in a challenging position. We have largely forgotten our scientific mission of advancing physiologic therapeutics and promoting drugless healing and our spiritual mission of preparing souls for Christ’s return by living and sharing the Three Angels’ Messages.
However, God does not see our situation as hopeless. In our last episode, we recognized that:
- We need to return to our scientific and spiritual missions.
- The health message should serve as a means of reaching hearts.
- Agriculture must be integrated into our sanitariums and schools.
- Business and entrepreneurship training for students and workers is essential.
- Unity among our ministerial, educational, and medical workers is crucial.
A New Approach to Evangelism
As we move into Part 6, we reflect on Ellen White’s vision regarding the work in cities. In Letters and Manuscripts, she emphasized the need for a decided change in our methods of outreach. She stated that she had seen in vision that companies should be organized and diligently trained to labor in our cities, working collaboratively to reach people effectively.
Community Engagement and Training
In order to efficiently reach the cities, classes and training sessions should be held for both local church members and community members. Classes for the community should focus on education in health and spiritual lines, allowing individuals to meet with ministers and Bible workers, fostering a personal connection. Classes for church members should promote unity of purpose and preparation for efficient and effective health and evangelistic service. Here’s what this could look like in practice:
- Classes for Church Members and Volunteers by Ministers and Bible Workers: These systematic classes focus on real Christian experience and heart work, equipping members to share their faith simply and effectively.
- Personal Workers Band: This group of church members is thoroughly trained in presenting the gospel message to their neighbors, and they engage in outreach by connecting with and working and praying for the salvation of community members.
Holistic Health and Education
While ministers and Bible workers provide spiritual training, doctors and nurses are equally engaged in practical health education:
- Cooking and Nursing Classes: These classes not only teach essential skills but also serve as a bridge to share the gospel.
- Community Health Initiatives: By offering free consultations and treatments, medical workers can build trust and open doors for further spiritual discussions.
The Power of Relationships
Building relationships is key in evangelistic efforts. By establishing a presence in the community—much like a mission-oriented health food restaurant does—church members can create a welcoming environment. This approach allows for:
- Trust Development: People are more likely to invite you into their homes once they know and trust you.
- Evangelistic Campaigns: When relationships are nurtured, community members are more receptive to invitations to church events.
The Legacy of John H. N. Tindall
John H. N. Tindall’s work exemplified the potential of integrated gospel health evangelism. After his conversion, he enrolled in the dietetics program at Loma Linda College of Medical Evangelists. His journey of faith led him to become a key figure in establishing new methods of evangelism as outlined by Ellen White.
Key Achievements of Tindall and His Collaborators:
- San Bernardino Campaign: Tindall accepted the challenge to establish a program of gospel medical evangelism in San Bernardino, resulting in 16 baptisms after a six-week effort.
- Success Across Cities: From San Bernardino to Indianapolis, Tindall’s campaigns yielded substantial results, with hundreds baptized and a high retention rate of converts.
The Call to Action
As we reflect on Tindall’s legacy, it becomes clear that the work of company evangelism is more relevant now than ever. There is a pressing need for healthcare professionals and lay workers to engage in this mission.
If you feel called to be part of this transformative work, I urge you to seek God’s guidance. The time is ripe for integrating health and gospel work, and your contribution could make a significant difference. The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the insights from Part 6 of our Dunamis Series emphasize the importance of returning to our roots in health and evangelism. By following the principles laid out by God and exemplified by leaders like John H. N. Tindall, we can revitalize our mission and effectively reach the communities around us. Thank you for being part of this journey!
